Origins of Golden Shield Qigong
Five centuries ago, while the Renaissance flourished in Europe, a female scholar with knowledge of both Daosit and Buddhist philosophies developed her own work of scientific art: Golden Shield Qigong. With her knowledge of Chinese medicine, she created a dynamic physical and mental discipline to improve health and longevity.

Although acquainted with Daoist and Buddhist way of life, she was not a member of either group. Being allowed to travel freely to and from their temples in China, she taught Golden Shield Qigong to monks also in quest of health and long life. With the use of meditations, Chinese herbs (both oral and topical), intense physical training- integration of Qi through the body, mind, and spirit (Jing, Qi, and Shen) blossoms like a lotus…
For centuries the sacred secrets were passed from one master to the next. Eventually, this whole system of Golden Shield Qigong transferred to Dr. Don X. Zhang, O.M.D., Ph.D., from Master Yang. It has been said that Master Yang, also known as “the Pearl” in China, was retained by Chairman Mao Zedong to train the skills of martial arts to generals of the Peoples Republic of China. Dr. Don X. Zhang, O.M.D., Ph.D., emigrated from China to the United States, and with the approval of Master Yang, began teaching Golden Shield Qigong to the public.
In 1999, L. Francesca Ferrari, L.Ac., D.M.Q. (China) became one of the original members of the California branch of the Kaishan Institute of Natural Health. She then emerged to be the first female Kaishan student in California to complete the rigorous Golden Shield Qigong Torso training. Additionally she has completed the Golden Brushes Qigong hand training and continues to train in Qigong to further develop her innate skills.
