Traditional Chinese Medical Diagnosis approaches an individual from a variety of perspectives including Jing, Qi,and Shen (mind, body, spirit). Observing, listening, smelling, questioning, and palpating are all tools for TCM diagnostics and are described as follows:
- Observing incudes the fluidity and rate of movement and walking. Observing complexion and the sparkle (Shen) in one's eyes reveals nuances of one's condition. The shape color and coating of the tongue is also observed to determine varios conditions of the internal organs.
- Listening includes the coherency of speech, tone of voice, sound of respiration, and information given.
- Palpating includes touching or pressing on areas where pain manifiests. Palpating also includes taking pulses on the left and right wrists. Certain areas of the wrtist correspind to specific organs and their meridians. By using varying pressure on the three sections of the wrists, a TCM practitioner notes the relative strength, weakness, rate and quality of the pulse.
- Smelling includes questioning about bad breath, unusual body odor, changes in smell of urine.
- Questioning includes a written intake form and oral questioning.
